Are you a future sporting star? Test your ability with the QAS YouFor2032 app

Regional Queenslanders can test their athletic ability by simply downloading an app.

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) YouFor2032 Talent Search app, driven by RACQ, aims to identify untapped sporting talent in remote parts of the State.

Knowing the challenges regional Queenslanders face in accessing sports facilities and coaches, QAS has designed the app to break down those accessibility barriers.

Athletes can test themselves in their own homes, at their own pace, and at a time that suits them.

Unlike in-person testing, the app allows athletes to perform the tests multiple times with only their best result being recorded.

QAS YouFor2032 Talent Lead Dr Alex Roberts said Queensland start-up Follow Me.ai helped QAS create the bespoke solution for screening future sporting stars.

“We’ve travelled all over Queensland as part of the YouFor2032 program but there are only so many locations we can visit to test athletes face-to-face,” Dr Roberts said.

“The idea of developing an app had been floated before but serious conversations began in June 2023.

“In two years, FOME.ai have helped us design an app that uses two-dimensional motion capture to test the power, strength, endurance and flexibility of athletes.”

Dr Roberts said the tests in the app require no previous skills and are designed to calculate someone’s general athletic capacity.

“Having had experience in sports science and athlete development, FOME.ai was able to work alongside us to design 12 tests that can help match athletes to a potential 17 sports,” she said.

“These include tests like a vertical jump, standing long jump, upper-body strength tests and aerobic endurance tests.

“The technology in the app is not only recording the total number of reps for a test but also analysing a person’s levers and joints to determine the form of each rep.”

Dr Roberts said once the QAS identified an athlete they would then provide additional support.

“We don’t identify young athletes and then just expect them to uproot their life and move to Brisbane,” she said.

“The idea behind it is we can nurture and guide them with funding and support so they can hone their skills at home.”

Since the app’s launch earlier this year, the results have been nothing but positive.

“We’re really happy with the uptake of the app since it launched and we are excited to hit the road in June for our regional tour so we can see some of these athletes in person,” Dr Roberts said.

“The more people that use the app, the better as that way we can continue making improvements and building its efficiency.”

Queenslanders with elite sporting dreams aged between 13 and 23, and between 13 and 30 for para-sports are being urged to test their skills via the YouFor2032 app.
