From Gold Coast theme park star to Rockhampton museum attraction: The story of engine No. 988
Discover Rockhampton’s engine No. 988 and explore the unique exhibits at Archer Park Rail Museum, including the rare Purrey steam tram.

Visitors heading to Rockhampton might not expect to stumble across a touch of Hollywood-style magic, but that’s exactly what awaits inside the Archer Park Rail Museum.
Among the historic displays sits Engine No. 988 – a classic Queensland steam locomotive with an unexpected past.
The steam train that became the Hogwarts Express
Before settling into its current home, the train once took on a starring role of sorts, being transformed into a version of the Hogwarts Express during promotional events at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast.
During its time in the spotlight, the locomotive was repainted in a vivid red and reimagined as the beloved train from the Harry Potter films, offering fans a chance to step into a world of wizardry.
While it wasn’t the actual locomotive used in the movies – those scenes were filmed in Scotland with a different train – No. 988 still captured imaginations as a convincing stand-in.

Restored to its original glory
These days, the engine has been carefully restored to its original ‘Brown Bomber’ livery, proudly reflecting its true heritage.
It now forms a key attraction at the Rockhampton museum, drawing both train enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans eager to see a piece of cinematic-inspired history up close.
Proud Queensland rail history
Originally built in 1952, No. 988 is part of the well-known C17 class of Queensland Railways locomotives.
For decades, machines like this played a vital role in regional transport, carrying freight and passengers across the state and helping connect communities.
Though its brush with movie magic was temporary, the locomotive’s story has added a unique layer to its legacy.
Rockhampton’s storytelling charm
Time Safaris Walking Tours owner Phil Hore said Rockhampton is filled with fascinating stories waiting to be uncovered.
“Rockhampton has so many hidden stories and surprising connections to history and popular culture,” Mr Hore said.
“To have a genuine Queensland steam locomotive that once played the role of the Hogwarts Express is something families and Harry Potter fans absolutely love discovering.”
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll said attractions like Archer Park helped bring the region’s stories to life for visitors of all ages.
“The destination is full of unique experiences that spark curiosity and imagination,” Ms Carroll said.
“This is one of those wonderful stories where local heritage meets a little movie magic, and it creates such a fun experience for families visiting the region.”

What else to see at Archer Park Rail Museum
While Engine No. 988 is a standout, there is plenty more to explore within the museum.
Housed inside a beautifully preserved heritage railway station dating back to the late 1800s, the site offers an immersive look into Central Queensland’s rail history.
Visitors can wander through displays of vintage locomotives, historic carriages and railway memorabilia, many of which tell the story of how trains shaped the region’s growth.
Ride a rare piece of transport history
One of the biggest highlights is the rare Purrey steam tram – believed to be the only working example of its kind in the world.
Purrey steam trams operated as public transport in Rockhampton from 1909 to 1939, carrying passengers around the city before being replaced by buses.
On select days, visitors can even experience a short ride, bringing a slice of early 20th-century travel to life.
Interactive experiences and living history
The museum also features interactive exhibits, a digital soundscape recreating the sights and sounds of a busy railway station, and knowledgeable volunteers who share stories that add depth and personality to the displays.
