Saddle up for Outback Cattle Drive

Road Trip

Hop in a saddle, or pull up by the campfire, for an Aussie 'drive' with a difference.

There’s nothing quite like the spirit of Outback Queensland, and nothing quite like the Outback Queensland Cattle Drive (OQCD).

For travellers seeking something off the beaten tourist track, and more unique than sightseeing, this event is a chance to follow the State’s historic stock routes, connect with the land and remote communities and create lasting memories under vast, clear skies.

Queensland Governor and RACQ Patron, Dr Jeannette Young PSM, will once again launch the OQCD on 24 May in Longreach.

In its second year, the event has attracted locals and visitors from worldwide, keen to enjoy a quintessential Aussie experience.

You don’t have to ride a horse either. There are plenty of opportunities to drive up and join the campfire overnight for a singalong, bush tucker and storytelling under the stars.

After leaving Longreach, the 1,200-strong herd will be mustered along what’s known as ‘the long paddock’ through Muttaburra, Aramac, Ilfracombe and Barcaldine, before finishing in Blackall about 45 days later.

The event is not only driving tourism and regional economies, it also helps support thousands of Queenslanders facing food insecurity challenges.

An alarming one in five Australians aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from week to week, and through Beef Bank the OQCD will deliver around 300,000 meals – ensuring more protein is put on the plates of those who need it most.

Travellers and adventurers have described this as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, enjoying country hospitality and entertainment along the way.

Once again, country music star James Blundell will be joining the ride.
