Three iconic beaches to hit up on your camper road trip

Road Trip

Australians have the immense privilege of having some of the most pristine beaches in the world on our doorstep.

Heading to the beach is often the holiday of choice for many Aussies, especially because we live so close to the coast.

Hiring a campervan is a unique way to explore Australia and incorporating beach stops into your road trip can elevate your journey.

Here’s three iconic beaches (named top of the 2022 list of Australian beaches by Tourism Australia) to stop at once you hit the road in your Apollo motorhome.

1. Misery Beach, Albany WA

You’ll be mesmerised by the azure water found at this secluded beach near the small town of Albany, Western Australia. Named for its history with whaling, convicts, and piracy (depending on whom you ask), this beach will treat you to calm waters and white sand, overlooked by a large granite cliff face.  After your visit, continue east in your camper and you’ll find yourself at Lucky Bay where you can hang with roos on a white sandy beach.

Pick up your van in: Perth

Driving time to Misery Beach: 5 hours

2. Horseshoe Bay, South West Rocks, NSW

Nestled between Port Macquarie and Coffs harbour, you’ll find the idyllic coastal town of South West Rocks. The town boasts beautiful beaches, but Horseshoe Bay Beach is the most popular. This sheltered spot, great for families wanting to swim, is one not to miss when living the #vanlife on the famous east coast.

Pick up your van in: Brisbane or Sydney

Driving time to Horseshoe Bay Beach: 5 hours to/from both

3. The Spit, Gold Coast, QLD

The Gold Coast is notorious for having some of the best beaches in Australia, maybe even the world. The Spit is the northernmost beach of the Gold Coast, being the link between the Broadwater and the ocean. This is a superb spot for picnics and fishing. You’ll find a dog beach here too so bring your furry friend and make this your first stop as you head south in your camper. Be sure to stop at Burleigh, Currumbin and Coolangatta for the full Gold Coast beach experience.

Pick up your van in: Brisbane

Driving time to The Spit: 1.25 hours
