RACQ gears up parents for the learner driver journey

News
RACQ is developing a new road safety program designed specifically to help mums and dads guide young drivers through the journey to getting their licence.

The initiative follows findings from RACQ’s latest Young Driver Survey, which revealed that 82% of learner drivers are taught primarily by parents or carers, yet there are limited resources available to support those in the passenger seat.

RACQ Coaching and Development Specialist Tiffany Boyd said that needs to change.

“For many parents, supervising a learner driver is a nerve-wracking experience,” Ms Boyd said.

“While teens are trained to navigate the road, adults are often left to navigate the stress without support.

“As road safety educators, we hear about the struggles from parents and students all the time and we wanted to create a useful tool to take the stress out of teaching teens and making sure our young ones pick up the skills and mentality they need to be safe drivers.”

Despite the large number of teens learning to drive with a parent or carer, the survey found almost 80% of young drivers feel more supported when learning with a professional instructor, some even reported feeling safer and calmer (3%).

Ms Boyd said the new program will aim to give parents, carers, supervisors, and community mentors the tools they need to teach safely and confidently.

“We want to help adults identify key risks facing young drivers, reinforce safe driving habits, manage distractions, and build their own confidence as supervisors,” she said.

“The course is also set to teach techniques that encourage meaningful conversations about road safety, but we want to hear directly from Queenslanders about what they would find most helpful.”

To ensure the program meets the needs of families across the State, RACQ is inviting Queenslanders to take part in a quick survey.

“This feedback will be critical in shaping the content of the program, determining how it’s delivered, and deciding where and when in-person sessions should be held,” Ms Boyd said.

As an added incentive, survey participants will go in the draw to win one of five $100 e-gift cards. The survey is open between 24 October and 30 November.
