Giving back to Queensland communities

RACQ in the Community

RACQ staff volunteered alongside community partners to make a positive impact this holiday season.

Over-indulging in food and other luxuries at this time of year is something many of us are guilty of and often take for granted.

However, sadly for a lot of families, skipping meals and forgoing gifts under the Christmas tree is a reality.

In 2023, The Salvation Army supported more than 5,000 families and individuals across Queensland through their Christmas warehouse.

Following multiple severe weather events and ongoing cost-of-living pressures, many Queensland households will also turn to support services like FareShare Australia for a nutritious meal this festive season.

With the help of RACQ volunteers, FareShare Australia and The Salvation Army can continue to provide essential support for families doing it tough.

RACQ Community and Sponsorships Manager Melanie Calzavara said staff volunteering opportunities are a key milestone on RACQ’s annual calendar.

“It’s been a challenging year for Queenslanders with multiple severe weather events and cost-of-living pressures continuing to impact households,” Ms Calzavara said.

“At RACQ, our purpose is to drive a better future for all Queenslanders, so we’re proud to partner with organisations like FareShare Australia and The Salvation Army to give back in any way we can.

“This month, 160 RACQ staff signed up to volunteer and our teams contributed 545 hours to prepare meals and pack toys for Queensland families.”

While it was the inaugural year volunteering at The Salvation Army’s warehouse, it was the third time RACQ staff descended on FareShare Australia’s Morningside kitchen to prepare essential meals for the festive period.

FareShare Australia gives food waste a second life by turning it into nutritious meals, which are distributed to homeless shelters, women’s refuges, community food banks, First Nations organisations and groups assisting after natural disasters.

Ms Calzavara said RACQ’s partnership with FareShare Australia had evolved over the past few years beyond just volunteering.

“Our support of FareShare Australia has expanded from volunteering to also helping fund their Disaster Relief Meal Program following Tropical Cyclone Alfred and flooding in North Queensland earlier this year,” she said.

“These meals are not only sent to communities immediately following severe weather but are also stored by community groups in preparation for future natural disasters.

“By supporting like-minded organisations and continuing the work of the RACQ Foundation, we aim to help build safer, more resilient Queensland communities.”
