Deepal launches shape-shifting multi-truck

Car Reviews

Is it an SUV or is it a ute? Chinese car maker Deepal says its new E07 multi-truck is a bit of both.

Among the more unusual new models revealed at the Melbourne motor show was the Deepal E07 multi-truck, a genre busting shape-shifting electric vehicle (EV) that converts from five-seat SUV to dual-cab ute at the press of a button.

The key to the E07’s versatility is its transformable body, which features a retractable dome roof and flat folding tailgate that allows the vehicle to go from SUV to ute mode in a matter of seconds.

The E07 is more than a car designer’s flight of fancy, too, with Deepal announcing that its order books were open for the new model with customer deliveries set to commence from the third quarter of this year.

Pricing starts at $64,9000 (MRLP) for the entry-level E07 RWD single-motor variant with outputs of 252kW/365Nm and claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds.

Stepping up to the $73,900 (MRLP) AWD dual-motor variant brings more muscular outputs of 440kW/645Nm, shaving a full three seconds off the 0-100km/h acceleration time to stop the clock at an impressive 3.9 seconds.

To give that some perspective, the Tesla Model Y AWD Performance costs a significantly higher $82,900 (MRLP) and covers the 0-100km/h sprint in a similar 3.7 seconds.

The E07 also boasts a claimed 300kg payload capacity, with Deepal Australia describing it as a vehicle capable of carrying, cruising, and camping, all in one package.

Both E07 variants are powered by an 89.98kWh ternary bithium (NMC) battery, which delivers up to 642km of range on the more lenient NEDC cycle, while the AWD offers up to 626km (NEDC).

Converting that figure to the more achievable WLTP figure would see approximate range of 546km and 532km respectively.

The E07 features 800V electrical architecture that supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 240kW, enabling approximately 350km of range to be added in 15 minutes on a suitably high-output DC charger.

Inside, the E07 features zero-gravity massage seats in the front row and a 15.4-inch high-definition infotainment touchscreen which can rotate left or right by 15 degrees.
