Shared platform with Mitsubishi Triton
In a ruthlessly pragmatic decision from the global Renault‑Nissan‑Mitsubishi Alliance, the Navara now shares its platform and mechanical underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Triton, the current generation of which launched in 2024.Body style and drivetrain changes
In another departure from previous generations, the D27 Navara is available exclusively as a turbodiesel‑powered 4x4 dual cab with automatic transmission. Anyone wanting a 4x2 drivetrain, manual transmission or a different body style will need to look elsewhere.Pricing and model lineup
Recommended retail pricing for the four‑grade lineup starts with the Navara SL at $53,348, followed by the ST at $56,765, the ST‑X at $63,177, and the range‑topping PRO‑4X, which costs $68,418. Exterior design and styling
The Navara’s sheet metal is also largely the same as Triton, but a bespoke grille and front‑end styling, along with new wheel designs, taillights, badging and decals, provide a suitable level of differentiation.The best‑looking Navara is arguably the lifestyle‑oriented PRO‑4X, with its Lava Red accents on the grille, wheelarch flares and tailgate, complemented by a black sports bar and black 17‑inch alloy wheels clad with 265/65R17 all‑terrain tyres.
The red accents are carried over to the PRO‑4X interior, which features embossed logos on the seats and contrast stitching.
Interior, space and technology
All Navara variants boast more headroom, shoulder room and rear‑seat legroom than their predecessor, along with a 9.0‑inch colour touchscreen running Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, DAB radio and a 360‑degree surround‑view monitor.Engine, performance and efficiency
All are powered by the same 2.4‑litre four‑cylinder bi‑turbo diesel, driving through a six‑speed automatic transmission.
The engine develops category‑competitive outputs of 150kW/470Nm – an increase of 10kW/20Nm over the outgoing model – and consumes 7.7L/100km on the combined‑cycle test, an improvement of 0.2L/100km.
A 75‑litre fuel tank affords a theoretical range between fills of 950km, and there’s a 17‑litre AdBlue tank for emissions compliance.
4WD systems and off‑road capability
There are also two different 4x4 systems available, with the base models adopting a conventional part‑time 4x4 system with high and low range, and the ST‑X and PRO‑4X gaining a so‑called ‘Super 4WD’ system with a full‑time all‑wheel‑drive mode in high range.All variants have an electronic rear differential lock as standard, with the ST‑X and PRO‑4X adding a seven‑mode multi‑terrain traction system for enhanced off‑road capability.
Safety and driver assistance
On the safety front, the Navara carries a five‑star ANCAP safety rating and comes equipped with eight airbags and a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).Suspension and Australian tuning (Premcar)
The biggest change to the mechanical package versus its Mitsubishi twin is the suspension, which has been developed and tuned by Australian vehicle‑development specialist Premcar.
As with Triton, the basic setup comprises double wishbones with coil springs and stabiliser bars up front, and leaf springs at the rear.
Premcar has added Australian‑made twin‑tube shock absorbers and three distinct suspension tunes, ranging from a heavy‑duty setting for the SL and ST models, a mid‑grade setup for the ST‑X, and a more comfort‑oriented setting for the PRO‑4X.
These changes provide useful, tangible dynamic advantages over the Triton, which will be an important selling point for salespeople trying to position the Navara against its Mitsubishi doppelganger.
