Top 5 learner driver questions answered

Driving Tips
After teaching more than 69,000 Queenslanders in FY26, RACQ’s education team shares the questions learner drivers ask most.

Each year, RACQ’s education team helps thousands of young people build the knowledge and skills they need to start their driving journey.

While it’s an exciting time, there’s plenty of new information for learners and their supervisors to take in.

To help make the road ahead a little clearer, our driver education team answers five of the questions they hear most often in the classroom.

Can I use my phone on handsfree while driving and can my supervisor answer the phone while I’m driving?

Under Queensland law, learner drivers and red P-platers under 25 can’t use a mobile phone while driving, even if it’s handsfree. This rule extends to the use of maps, music, wireless headsets and speakerphones for a learner driver. Passengers in the vehicle can use a phone but need to ensure it’s not on speaker to avoid distracting the driver.

Can I get fined for eating or drinking while driving?

The short answer is no – you can’t be fined specifically for eating or drinking behind the wheel. However, it isn’t recommended because if it affects your ability to drive safely you could be charged with careless driving or worse. The best approach is to eat and hydrate before getting behind the wheel, helping you stay focused on reaching your destination safely.

How long can I drive in one session?

There’s no set limit on how long or how far you can drive, but it’s recommended that drivers take a 15-minute break at least every two hours. For learners, shorter sessions can be a great place to start, as there’s a lot to take in when you’re new behind the wheel. Consider taking more frequent breaks during your first few hours, then gradually extending your driving sessions as you gain confidence and work towards completing your 100 hours.

Am I able to tow a caravan or boat?

Yes, learner drivers can tow a caravan or boat in Queensland, provided their L plates are displayed correctly, and all safety requirements are followed. It’s important to have a supervisor who is confident and experienced in towing. If towing is likely to become a regular part of your driving once you’re licensed, consider enrolling in a specialised driver training course to build your skills and confidence.

What’s the blood alcohol limit for a supervisor of a learner driver?

In Queensland, anyone supervising a learner driver must have a blood alcohol concentration of equal to or below 0.05. However, our recommendation is to avoid drinking altogether before getting into the passenger seat, so you can stay alert and give the learner driver your full attention.
