RACQ spokesperson Tristan Vorias said Queensland’s road toll is significantly higher this year, compared to the same time last year.

“So far this year 214 people have been killed on the State’s roads, that’s 17 more than the same time last year,” Mr Vorias said.

“It’s incredibly concerning to see that Queensland is on track to have its worst road toll in more than a decade.”

Mr Vorias said the September school holidays were a popular time for families to enjoy a spring road trip, and it was important motorists avoid the Fatal 5 driving behaviours to reduce their risk of being involved in a serious crash.

“We need to make sure we’re not getting behind the wheel drunk or tired and we must always wear a seatbelt and stick to the speed limit,” Mr Vorias said.

“Distracted drivers are also a massive danger to themselves and others.

“To avoid the temptation of touching or looking down at your phone while driving, spend a few minutes before you leave the driveway getting your directions and music playlist sorted.

“Distracted driving is deadly, but avoidable. Reading a text message or changing the song is not worth risking your life.

“The Fatal 5 are called that for a reason, they are the leading causes of deaths on Queensland roads. By avoiding them you are significantly reducing your chance of becoming a road crash statistic.

“We want Queenslanders to have an amazing break and to make sure they arrive and return home from their holidays safely.”

The Queensland school holidays run from 17 September – 4 October.
