Motorists warned to drive carefully to the conditions
The RACQ is urging motorists to take care and drive to the conditions with overnight storms cutting roads in the State’s south east – particularly in the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim regions.
Club Spokesperson Tristan Vorias said as at 10am Friday, more than 120 roads were closed across the State as a result of long-term and flash flooding.
“We’ve seen roads right across the northern Gold Coast, Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim impacted by flash flooding – from Pimpama down to the Currumbin Valley and out to Canungra and Mount Nathan,” Mr Vorias said.
With this year’s road toll already at 218, Mr Vorias said motorists need to take as much care as possible in these dangerous driving conditions.
“Before heading off on your trip make sure you plan ahead using the RACQ Road Conditions website to avoid any flooded roads,” Mr Vorias said.
“If you do come across a flooded road, forget it, turn around, and find an alternate route. It only takes 15 centimetres of water for a car to be washed off the road.
“It’s important to make sure your tyres are pumped and have good tread, your windscreen wipers are working and in good condition and to know how to use your demister to clear fog from the windscreen.
“In these wet conditions it’s paramount to keep ample distance between you and the car in front – we recommend at least a four second gap – and drive with your headlights on so you can see and be seen.”
Wet weather driving tips:
- Plan ahead using the RACQ’s Road Conditions website to avoid flooded roads
- If you do come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternate route.
- Drive carefully to the conditions, the posted speed limit may be too fast depending on conditions.
- Turn on low beam headlights to see and be seen
- Double the recommended "two-second gap" following distance to at least four seconds
- Keep windscreen wipers in good working order - blades should be replaced every 12-18 months
- Know how to use your car's ventilation system and demister effectively to keep window glass clear
- Ensure your tyres are properly inflated and have good tread depth for traction
