Help! I’m teaching my teen to drive

Driving Tips

RACQ is looking to develop a course for parents teaching young driver and needs your help.

Learning to drive can be stressful for teens and terrifying for parents.

While resources for learners have advanced, and rightly so, one key factor is often overlooked – the role of the person in the passenger seat.

RACQ’s latest Young Driver Survey revealed 82% of learners were taught primarily by parents or carers – yet most young drivers say they feel better supported with a professional instructor, with some reporting they feel safer and calmer.

It raises a critical question: Are we giving parents the tools they need to teach safely and confidently?

RACQ believes the answer is no.

To address this gap, RACQ is developing a road safety program for adults supporting young drivers.

To ensure the program meets the needs of Queensland families, RACQ Coaching and Development Specialist Tiffany Boyd said the Club was inviting people to take part in a short survey.

“This feedback will be critical in helping shape the content of the program, determine how sessions are delivered, and decide where they should be held,” Ms Boyd said.

“In essence, we want to design a program to help parents, carers, supervisors, and community mentors steer their loved ones through the twists and turns of learning to drive a car, from L plates to P plates and beyond.

“The aim of the course will be to help adults identify the key risks facing young drivers, reinforce safe driving habits, manage distractions, and build their own confidence as supervisors.

“It will also be designed to teach techniques to encourage meaningful conversations about road safety between adults and young drivers, driving a strong road safety culture within families and communities.”

RACQ is offering five $100 e-gift cards to randomly selected participants who complete the survey between 24 October and 30 November*.
