Australia Zoo is calling for hands-on helpers to join its ‘khaki crew’ of volunteers.

Anyone with a passion for wildlife conservation can apply for the volunteer program.

Head of Education and Volunteers at Australia Zoo Alistair Lavers said volunteers played a crucial role at the zoo, supporting keepers and helping create memorable experiences for guests.

Volunteers provide valuable support to our keepers and guests at Australia Zoo and we are immensely proud of their dedication in helping us continue Steve Irwin’s mission of ‘conservation through exciting education’,” Mr Lavers said.

“Every volunteer is part of the Australia Zoo culture and contributes to our conservation mission while building their own skillset and career paths.”

Applicants must be 18 or older, although Australia Zoo also offers a high school work experience program for students aged 14–17.

Once accepted into the program, volunteers complete a five-day probation period before applying for an ongoing placement.

“Australia Zoo receives the brilliant support of volunteers all year long, assisting with key tasks and
responsibilities directed towards the welfare of our animals and comfort of our guests,” Mr Lavers said.

“Steve always dreamed of a world where humans and wildlife would live harmoniously with each other.

“Every day, we are proud to be continuing his important mission, and our volunteering program takes us one step closer, assisting with our commitment to conserving and protecting wildlife and wild places.”

Volunteer Margaret Brasseauxwas inspired to join the program by the Irwin family’s conservation work.

“It also gave me the chance to confirm my desire to work towards protecting wildlife all around the world through hands-on experiences,” Ms Brasseaux said.

“I knew I would be provided with the support and supervision needed to assist me in developing my skills, knowledge and understanding.”

Ms Brasseaux said becoming a volunteer at Australia Zoo was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

You are able to experience multiple departments and work with professionals that will assist you on your journey,” she said.

“The volunteer program is always expanding, meaning new husbandry and customer service tasks are being set.

“Volunteering isn’t just with the zoo animals. You can also volunteer at the Wildlife Hospital, guest services, and education departments.

“You also get to connect with like-minded people, who can further support and motivate you.”
