The Queensland government recently launched the Heavy Vehicle Safety Action Plan 2019-21 and is delivering more than $1.92 billion funding towards reducing heavy vehicle fatalities on the state's roads.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the funds would be focused primarily on reducing the road toll and road safety upgrades across Queensland.

"We refuse to accept road trauma as an inevitable part of using our roads and this plan is our commitment to working with the heavy vehicle industry and communities to reduce the road toll," Minister Bailey said.

"Over the next ten years, the volume of freight moving across Queensland will grow by more than 20 percent. That's why it's critical we continue to look at ways to drive road safety for our heavy vehicle industry alongside all road users."

RACQ Principal Traffic and Safety Engineer Greg Miszkowycz said the freight task continues to expand at a significant rate, so motorists and other road users can expect to interact with even more trucks on Queensland roads in the future.

"Investing in cost effective and high benefit safety upgrades such as wide centre lines, safety barriers and intersection improvements will reduce road trauma on our roads," Mr Miszkowycz said.

"Heavy vehicle driver fatigue is also an issue, so provision of additional heavy vehicle rest areas and monitoring and enforcement of driving hours will lead to safer outcomes for everyone.

"Safer roads mean less chances of crashes and lower severity outcomes, especially around larger and heavier vehicles."
