Queenslanders urged to ride safe this festive season
With end of year celebrations around the corner, Queenslanders are being issued a timely reminder to make sure they know e-scooter laws before taking one for a spin.
RACQ Principal Technical Researcher Andrew Kirk said it was important for riders to know the laws and also know how to ride one safely.
“It’s great to see so many Queenslanders choosing e-scooters as their preferred mode of transport,” Mr Kirk said.
“Whether you’re planning on riding an e-scooter yourself this festive season or are gifting one to a family member, it’s important to do your research.
“Many people don’t realise that e-scooters are only legal for riders at least 16 years of age. Those aged 12-15 can ride with adult supervision but if your child is under 12 you really should think of a different gift until they have developed the spatial awareness to navigate traffic” Mr Kirk said.
“Making sure the recipient knows how to ride one correctly and safely is equally important.”
Mr Kirk said riding an e-scooter should be taken as seriously as driving a car and have the Fatal Five messaging front of mind.
“As we approach the silly season, we particularly want to remind people to never jump on an e-scooter if they’ve been drinking.
“Not only is it dangerous but could lead to a $431 fine for drinking while riding or a maximum penalty of $5750 for riding under the influence.
“Riding while using your phone is also illegal and could lead to a fine of nearly $1100.”
Our colleagues at the Japan Automobile Federation recently crash-tested a number of e-scooters in various situations to highlight the risks involved in riding an e-scooter. It showcases the injuries that can be sustained when travelling at 20-kilometres an hour with and without a helmet.
