Motorists reveal their petrol station pet peeves

Drivers causing delays for others at the pump and poor parking etiquette were among the top petrol station habits fuelling frustration for Queenslanders, according to new RACQ research.

RACQ’s statewide survey asked Queenslanders to rank their biggest petrol station pet peeves with motorists sitting in their cars on their phones after filling up (37%) topping the list*.

The research revealed out-of-order signs on fuel pumps (33%), drivers blocking access to pumps when not buying fuel (28%) and motorists parking in the last bay instead of moving forward (26%) were also key frustrations.

RACQ spokesperson Tristan Vorias said the findings showed small acts of courtesy could make a big difference, particularly during peak periods.

“When drivers linger at the pump or block access unnecessarily, it can slow traffic through the petrol station and add to frustration for other motorists,” Mr Vorias said.

“Good petrol station etiquette comes down to being aware of others. A little patience and consideration can help make the experience smoother for everyone.”

Mr Vorias said there were simple steps motorists could take to reduce delays for others at the bowser.

“If you’ve finished filling up, move your car to a parking bay before checking your phone, grabbing a coffee or heading inside for anything that might take a little longer,” he said.

“It might only feel like a short delay to one driver, but during busy periods those small hold-ups can quickly create unnecessary frustration for others which can spill out onto the road.

“Drivers should avoid blocking water and air bays unless they are using those services and should not park at a bowser unless they are buying fuel.”

The survey also found pet peeves extended beyond poor behaviour for younger Queenslanders, with more than a quarter of Gen Z motorists (26.4%) frustrated by limited information on pricing boards, including when prices for all fuel types were not displayed.

“A great way to avoid the frustration of a surprise at the bowser is to do your research before filling the tank,” Mr Vorias said.

“Since the return of the fuel excise, prices have steadily increased due to sustained higher oil prices, a trend we’ve also seen across regional Queensland. However, oil price remain highly volatile making fuel price predictions difficult.

“While prices remain high, we are not seeing evidence of price gouging, with retail margins staying reasonable.

“Checking prices before you leave using tools like the RACQ Fuel and Deals app can help you save money and support greater competition by rewarding cheaper stations.”
