RACQ welcomes recent Federal Government decisions on natural disaster management

RACQ has welcomed the recent Federal Government's decision to improve the way Australia prepares for and responds to natural disasters.
Cyclone.
Firstly, creating a single agency – the National Emergency Management Agency – to lead co-ordination, activity and policy across all facets of disaster management is long overdue.

It will bring much-needed focus and clarity of responsibility for the public service, states and territories as well as all the sectors that are involved in disaster management.

In addition, this week’s announcement that Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) CEO Brendan Moon will lead this new agency is welcome news.

Mr Moon has helped ensure the QRA remains a stand-out performer when it comes to disaster response and initiatives to enhance disaster resilience in Queensland.

It is no surprise that the Federal Government has looked to Queensland – a state well-practiced and experienced in disasters – to pick the right people for this area of policy and service delivery.

While the recent decisions are a step in the right direction, RACQ believes work must accelerate on increasing Queensland’s resilience to natural disasters.

Our over 1.7 million members need the Federal Government’s significant funding commitments to progress to real spending in the right areas on the right projects – initiatives that will reduce risk in our most vulnerable areas.

RACQ looks forward to working with the Federal Government and the new agency on this critical piece of work as we head into another disaster season.
