RACQ’s Head of Public Policy Dr Michael Kane said the $4.3 billion Budget included $2.38 billion for transport including Brisbane Metro and green bridges, and record funding for active transport.

“We’re also pleased to see ongoing funding for the planning of Metro Stage 2 and RACQ is keen to engage with Council on this great opportunity for Brisbane,” Dr Kane said.

“We welcome the record $41 million commitment to improve suburban foothpaths. This will help to improve our active transport network and get more residents walking, cycling, and scooting rather than using their cars.

“It’s also exciting to see funding for a feasibility study into a battery-powered ferry, known as the EVCat and we would like to see this expanded to include consideration of smaller electric fast-ferries.

“We know electric vehicle ownership has skyrocketed across Brisbane this year, and interest continues to grow, so it’s clear that residents are keen to explore cleaner and more sustainable methods of transport – and that should include public transport.

“We also welcome the announcement on the Gold CityGlider service from Northshore Hamilton through the City to Woolloongabba. As Brisbane continues to grow, it’s important that we have these high-frequency, high-quality public transport services.”

Community clubs will also benefit from the $2.6 million boost to the Rebuild and Recover – Flood Resilient Communities Program. This closely emulates what the RACQ Foundation has been doing for a long time now, helping communities recover and bounce back from future disasters.

Dr Kane also noted Council’s deliberate strategy to not add to cost-of-living pressures for Brisbane households by keeping the city’s rate increase to 3.45%.
