RACQ Foundation helps regional Queenslanders hear a little easier

News
Hear and Say is helping regional Queenslanders with hearing impairments to program their cochlear implants remotely with new technology thanks to a $20,000 grant from RACQ Foundation.

The technology allows people who use cochlear implants to receive their six-monthly check-ups from the comfort of their own homes, removing the need for the long and costly regular commutes to Brisbane.

RACQ Foundation spokesperson David Contarini said the grant would help Queenslanders of all ages from many regional and rural areas.

“RACQ Foundation is proud to support the wonderful work of Hear and Say to make the gift of hearing a little easier for many Queenslanders living outside the south east,” Mr Contarini said.

“Parts of regional Queensland have faced both devastating drought and flooding in the past few years, and this technology means commuting for regular check ups is no longer an added burden.”

Maddi Stanton was one of the first to benefit from the innovative equipment at Hear and Say, connecting to an audiologist in Brisbane from her lounge room in Emerald.

“It was becoming difficult to regularly make the nine-hour drive from Emerald to Brisbane for appointments,” Ms Stanton said.

“I love the remote audiology services that Hear and Say now has available for people like me living outside of the cities.

“A world of hearing and sound means I get to live an everyday life, and be able to talk with my husband, family and friends.

“However, I’m most grateful for being able to hear my babies laugh – that’s just the most amazing sound.”

Since 2011 RACQ Foundation’s Community Grant Program has gifted more than $9.24 million to assist community organisations throughout Queensland.
