Need assistance selecting the right battery charger?
RACQ has a range of battery chargers available through staff patrols.
Steps to selecting the right battery charger
Step 1 - Identify the size of the battery you need to charge
Batteries sold in Australia are rated in Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and Reserve Capacity (RC). If the battery label does not indicate the Ah rating, to get an approximate* Amp hour (Ah) rating, multiply the RC x 0.6. Eg 90 RC x 0.6 = 54 Ah.
Note: These details can be found on the battery label located on the top or side of the battery.
*Ah ratings are set by the manufacturer; this is an approximate calculation only. See the table below for Ah ratings.
Step 2 - Identify what you need the charger for
Charging Mode - is used to recharge a discharged battery to a normal condition.
Maintenance Mode - is used to maintain a fully charged battery only. This mode will not recharge a discharged battery. Maintenance Mode charging is only recommended for people who use their vehicles infrequently or go away for extended periods.
Step 3 - Identify the battery type
These details can be found on the battery label located on the top or side of the battery. If you are unable to find this information, please contact RACQ Technical Advisory for assistance.
Note: Most standard automotive batteries are lead acid hybrid / calcium or lead acid calcium / calcium. All RACQ Batteries are either Calcium, AGM or EFB. (EFB are charged the same as a Calcium Battery)
