Rush of ANCAP five-star safety-rated models
Safety-conscious consumers are the winners with several new models achieving the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The Nissan Qashqai SUV is the latest new model to receive the maximum five-star safety rating by Australia’s independent safety authority, ANCAP, joining other recently crowned vehicles from Ford, Genesis, GWM, Kia, Tesla and Volvo.
The new Nissan SUV achieved ANCAP’s second highest score to date within the Safety Assist area of assessment, achieving five-star scores in each of the four key areas of ANCAP assessment and chalking up an impressive 97% in the Safety Assist pillar.
A statement from ANCAP said the score was achieved through the standard fitment of an advanced and robust range of collision avoidance technologies.
"Nissan is to be congratulated for the Qashqai's range of active safety systems," ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said.
"The presence and performance of these features demonstrates the significant effort Nissan has made to offer the best safety equipment possible to Qashqai buyers.
"By achieving these scores under ANCAP's most stringent protocols, Nissan's impressive safety performance will be welcomed by families and fleet buyers looking to purchase their next SUV."
The Qashqai joins other recently awarded five-star safety-rated cars including both single and twin-motor variants of the Volvo C40 Recharge small SUV.
In September, petrol variants of the GWM Haval Jolion, plus the Ford Ranger ute and Everest SUV were awarded the maximum five-star safety rating.
Three new EV models – the Tesla Model Y, Kia Niro and Genesis GV60 – also achieved five-star safety ratings in September.
ANCAP recently announced a range of new and updated safety tests and assessments will take effect from January 2023.
The expanded 2023 test and assessment criteria includes new areas such as the ability of a vehicle to avoid a crash with a motorcyclist, child presence detection, and vehicle submergence.
The new tests are designed to incentivise a continued high level of safety for Australian and New Zealand new car buyers, according to the independent safety regulator.
