Hyundai adds thrifty hybrid to Santa Fe line-up
Hyundai adds a fuel-sipping hybrid variant to its popular Santa Fe SUV range.
The news that Hyundai has added a thrifty hybrid option to its popular Santa Fe family SUV range will be music to the ears of Queensland families keeping a wary eye on the price of fuel.
The new Santa Fe Hybrid variants join the existing petrol V6 and four-cylinder turbo-diesel models, promising a 17% reduction in fuel consumption versus the turbo-diesel when driving in the city and suburbs.
That equates to fuel consumption of 6.0L/100km on the official combined cycle and 6.2L/100km on the urban cycle, which is very respectable for a large six or seven-seat SUV.
Available in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander grades, the turbo-petrol/electric powertrain combines a 1.6-litre T-GDi engine and a 44.2kW electric motor, which draws power from a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
The system delivers combined outputs of 169kW and 350Nm, and drives all four wheels via a newly developed six-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai said this meant the Santa Fe Hybrid produced more torque than the 3.5-litre V6 across a broader rev range and more power than the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, while using less fuel than both on the official combined cycle.
Manufacturer-recommended pricing for the Santa Fe hybrid Elite is $63,000, which is $3000 more than the turbo-diesel equivalent and $6,500 more than the petrol V6.
Stepping up to the hybrid Highlander raises the stakes to $69,550, which is again a $3000 premium over the turbo-diesel and $6,500 more than the petrol V6.
The Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander is on sale now, with Hyundai advising it has 400 units available in dealers nationally.
