MG’s sporty new EV headed for Australia
Sleek electric roadster from MG promises wind-in-the-hair thrills.
The first example of MG’s sleek Cyberster electric roadster has landed in Australia for dealer and customer inspection ahead of the battery-electric sports car going on sale in the final quarter of this year.
The stylish MG will be the first battery-electric roadster sold here and is sure to turn plenty of heads with its stunning exterior design featuring scissor doors and a fully-electric fabric hood which can be opened or closed in as little as 15 seconds.
The interior features a futuristic four-screen design while under the skin is a 77kWh battery powering twin-electric motors, giving the electric roadster all-wheel-drive grip and outputs of 380kW/725Nm, enough to propel the 2210kg sports car from 0–100km/h in a Porsche-like 3.2 seconds.
Australian specifications have not yet been finalised but the claimed combined-cycle range of overseas models is 460km with a maximum fast charging capability of 144kW.
With an overall length of 4,535mm and riding on a 2,690mm wheelbase, the Cyberster is longer, wider and taller than perennial sportscar favourite the Mazda MX-5, but its price will be significantly higher, with MG Australia alluding to a broad range of between $100,000 and $150,000.
While that pricing will break new ground for the usually affordable MG brand in Australia, the slinky battery-electric convertible takes MG back to its historic sporting roots, cemented by fun-driving roadsters like the MG A, MG B and MG F of the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s respectively.
“The Cyberster pays respects to 100 years of MG creating vehicles that people love to drive. We’re really excited to be opening dealer orders and our official register your interest for our all-electric roadster,” said MG Motor Australia’s National Sales Manager, Brad Chruszcz.
