Leapmotor jumps into Australian EV market

The Leapmotor C10 is among the wave of new Chinese brands launching or establishing themselves on the Australian market this year.

If you’ve never heard of Leapmotor then you’re likely in good company as it’s still largely unknown here, but the electric vehicle (EV) brand recently launched its C10 SUV here and is poised to release additional models before the year’s end.

Unlike some rival Chinese brands that are going it alone on the Australian market, Leapmotor is backed by Stellantis, the international automotive conglomerate comprising such brands as Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep.

Leapmotor and Stellantis inked a deal last year that gives the latter the exclusive right to sell and manufacture the Chinese car maker’s products outside China.

That deal also means Leapmotor starts with the backing of an established network of dealers and parts distribution in Australia.

The company has 12 sales, service and parts dealerships in mainland Australia, including two in South East Queensland.

Among Leapmotor’s claims to fame are its high levels of vertical integration, which see more than 70% of the value of its vehicles produced in-house, including its own EV batteries and integrated electric vehicle architecture.

That’s unusual in the broader automotive industry where outsourcing of components is commonplace.

Leapmotor’s first Australian vehicle, the C10 is available in two well-equipped variants, the Style ($45,888) and Design ($49,888), both featuring the same 69.9kWh battery and single electric motor with outputs of 160kW/320Nm. The battery is good for a range of up to 420km, based on the WLTP cycle.

The Style features 18-inch alloy wheels, a 14.6-inch high-definition central display, a 360-degree camera, over-the-air update capability, and a comprehensive array of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) features.

The Design variant adds larger 20-inch wheels, multi-colour interior ambient lighting, heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

Both models feature a 14.6-inch high-definition central display and a 10.25-inch driver instrument display, with a roomy five-seat interior and generous 581 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1,410 litres when the second-row seats are folded.

The C10 comes with a seven-year, 160,000km warranty on the vehicle and eight-year, 160,000km high-voltage battery warranty.
