Nissan enters new Frontier with PHEV ute

Nissan appears determined to not be left behind in the fast-growing PHEV ute space, revealing its new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid load hauler at China’s giant Auto Shanghai motor show.

Nissan debuted its first electrified pickup, the all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid at Auto Shanghai, with the new model boasting 800Nm torque and up to 135km of EV-only range.

Co-developed with Zhengzhou Nissan (ZNA) and due on sale in China before the end of this year, the all-new Frontier Pro is already confirmed for future export.

The new model is claimed to combine the Japanese car maker’s decades of pickup truck experience with the latest powertrain technology from the world’s leading NEV (New Energy Vehicle) market, China.

Designed at Nissan’s Shanghai studio, the five-seat, dual-purpose pickup boasts a modern exterior design that includes a nod to the 1980s Nissan D21 hardbody pickup. Three central LED lights parallel to the bonnet-line pay subtle homage to the distinctive three-slot opening that mark the iconic D21.

Inside, the cabin appears spacious and well-appointed with a standard panoramic roof, a 10-inch LCD instrument panel, and 14.6-inch infotainment screen.

Front seat heating, ventilation and seat-back massage are available options.

Other handy lifestyle features include roof rails, an electronic retractable cargo cover, and a Vehicle-to-load (V2L) port which leverages the plug-in hybrid battery to supply up to 6kW of power.

Under the bonnet is a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine and a transmission-mounted, high-output electric motor.

Combined, the system is claimed to deliver more than 300kW of power and up to 800Nm of torque, with Nissan stating the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid will offer up to 135km of EV-only range in the China domestic market.

All models feature a five-link coil-spring rear suspension and an automatic all-wheel drive system which controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels.

The standard wheels are 18-inch alloys clad with 265/65R18 tyres, while off-road capability is supported by an electromechanical rear differential lock.

The drivetrain supports four drive modes – Hybrid, Pure electric, Performance and Snow – allowing the driver to select a mode to suit specific conditions.

Nissan stopped short of naming Australia specifically as a potential export market, but given the size of the pickup market here and the strong consumer interest in rivals including the BYD Shark and Ford Ranger PHEVs, dealers will no doubt be putting plenty of pressure on head office to greenlight local sales.
