Great south-east Queensland drives

Road Trip
Going for a drive can be one of the best ways to take time out of your busy life.

There are plenty of great drives around the greater Brisbane area for you to explore and experience. Here are four you should consider:

Mount Nebo/Mount Glorious

Travel roughly 30 minutes from the Brisbane CBD and you’ll be met by the beginning of what is one of the best driving roads in the state. The winding road up to Mount Nebo is a marvel in construction, snaking its way through dense bushland, changing direction rapidly through a series of tight bends. It’s a great road if you have a sports car. Otherwise, you’re still in for an adventure. It is hard to believe that there are such great roads so close to the hustle and bustle of the city. The blacktop will take you across to Mount Glorious, which is equally as beautiful. From there, the road descends quickly into the valley below where there is an abundance of great picnic spots. It’s a perfect daytrip just a stone’s throw from the Brisbane CBD.

Mount Tamborine

If picturesque rainforest walks, adventure parks and cute cafes interest you, then Mount Tamborine is the perfect getaway. The drive there is great, too, as you climb to the summit. Once you arrive there is plenty to see and do, from activities at Thunderbird Park to scenic bushwalks in the surrounding hills. It’s a great spot to spend the day and is under an hour’s drive from Brisbane.

Mount Coot-tha

For the best views of Brisbane, go no further than Mount Coot-tha lookout. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see as far as the islands in Moreton Bay and, of course, the entire CBD. There is a great little drive from JC Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain right up to the summit, passing the major Brisbane news stations on the way. At the lookout there is a great cafe and restaurant. There’s no better way to enjoy a burger than with views like this.

Wynnum/Manly

While not as spectacular of a drive as the others on this list, the beachfront at Wynnum/Manly is a great spot to relax with family and friends. You can walk or ride along the entire waterfront, taking in fantastic views of the bay. The area is also known for its amazing fish and chip cafes so make sure you get a belly full before leaving this fantastic destination.
