Get a taste of Queensland’s wild west

Outback Queensland is cherished for its star-studded night skies and cascading landscapes, but it's also an inimitable place of true grit and hard yakka where sweat, heat and dust are standard in everyday life. If the words bull riding, whip cracking and tent boxing perks your ears, muster your mates and trek your way into Queensland’s wild west for the iconic Mount Isa Rodeo. For four glorious days in August, the excitement ramps up when man meets beast and the locals let loose for the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. Now in its 64th year, the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo returns 10–13 August 2023.

Explore a spectacular abandoned mine

Located between Cloncurry and Mount Isa, each year tourists flock to witness the picture-perfect turquoise water at Mary Kathleen Uranium mine. Demolished in 1984, the once booming mine now welcomes visitors far and wide to discover its rich history and unique sights to see. Located only 6km from town, take in breathtaking views of cascading tiered slabs that homes one of the region’s most tranquil watering holes. Known as the ‘Little Blue Lake,’ while you cannot swim in it due to radioactivity, its electric, bright colour contrasts to the surrounding dry elements, and is one site that you don’t want to miss.
