Outback gorges steeped in history and wonder
If you thought north west Queensland was simply red dirt and dust, think again.
North west Queensland is home to lush landscapes, waterways, towering sandstone and deep gorges.
Whether you want a getaway packed full of adventure or relaxation, here are four ‘gorge-ous’ destinations for you to enjoy.
Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, Burke Shire
It’s no wonder thousands travel every year to this world-class natural spectacle. Grab your closest pals and go on a four-wheel drive to Lawn Hill National Park – an adventure-land full of water activities, rich history, camping and mind-blowing landscapes. Deep within the natural parks lies the Riversleigh World Heritage Site – a World Heritage-listed site known for outstanding mammal and reptile remains dating back to 25 million years. David Attenborough called it one of the top four most important deposits in the world. Explore the park on one of seven walking trails ranging from beginners to professionals. The views on top of Upper Gorge are well worth the effort. You can also take to the water and canoe to Middle Gorge for postcard-worthy views.
Copperfield Gorge, Etheridge Shire
This natural landmark is built upon remnants of an ancient lava flow that spewed from a now-extinct volcano thousands of years ago. Only a short walk from Einsaleigh Hotel, work off that classic pub feed with a stunning scenic trek around the gorge while taking an intimate look at the metallic basalt rockwalls created from the McBride Volcanic Province. Copperfield Gorge is the perfect place to go swimming, catch a few fish or to try stand-up paddleboarding. Another bonus is that the gorge is dog-friendly.
Cobbold Gorge, Forsayth
Along the Savannah Way lies the astonishing geological treasure of Cobbold Gorge. Embrace true outback living and set up camp or stay at one of the many motel-style rooms at Cobbold Village. Wake up to the chatter of birds and get ready for a day of aqua golf and kayaking in the gorge. Take a scenic helicopter tour and get a birdseye view of the natural wonder, topped off with a few nibblies and drinks at a picnic on top of the gorge. Finish the day by witnessing a breathtaking outback sunset fit for a sunset at Quartz Blow lookout.
Porcupine Gorge, Flinders Shire
Walk along Porcupine Creek and check out the incredible canyon surrounded by open woodland and luscious greenery. Layers of sedimentary rocks spanning hundreds of millions of years are just another reason to visit this wonder. Wake up early to watch the sunrise over Australia’s very own ‘pyramid’. Walk along the park’s numerous hiking tracks to view the multi-coloured and enjoy a swim among one of the many water holes that rest on this ancient land.
