When looking to prepare your home for sale, whites and neutrals will produce a refreshed and cohesive space, allowing potential buyers to visualise themselves living there.

Selecting the right scheme can make spaces seem larger and brighter, providing a sense of value for money.

But, have you ever walked into a paint department for white paint, only to be overwhelmed by the hundreds of different colour options?

White isn’t just white and there are some simple tricks and things to consider to ensure you pick the white that is right for you.

First of all, it’s important to look at the fixtures and fittings of your space.

Floors often get forgotten when in fact they contain one of the largest amounts of colour, whether it be honey-coloured floorboards, grey slate or sandy tiles.

Large pieces of furniture and window coverings also play a large part in the consolidation of a colour scheme.

The next thing you need to think about is the light in the area.

Whether it’s electric or natural, light will affect colour.

Your room may receive a lot of warm, afternoon sunlight or may be lit by cool halogens.

By and large cool and warm undertones tend to work against each other.

Your best result will be achieved by choosing a white with a similar undertone to the major elements of the rest of the space.

Start by choosing some colour swatches of whites that you think might work and check them against furniture and flooring.

When you’ve narrowed down your choice it’s a really good idea to get test pots of the paint itself.

You can either brush the paint out on to a large piece of card and move it around, or you can brush the paint straight onto the wall.

Either way spend some time reviewing the colour at different times of the day and night, lights on and lights off.

It’s worth spending some time living with the samples so you’re completely sure of your final choice.

Some popular Wattyl whites to consider are Calcium, Floral White and Dhimba.
