Skoda Octavia Scout 4x4 Premium 132TSI

by Barry Green,reviewed August 2015

Station wagon or SUV? For buyers considering either, Skoda’s new Octavia-based Scout pretty much offers the best of both worlds.
With its extra 31mm of ground clearance (171mm in all), underbody protection and all-wheel-drive, the Scout can follow most ‘on demand’ SUVs away from the black top.

Yet its drive dynamics – sharp handling, compliant ride and engine response – are more like those of a wagon. And a good one at that.

The 132TSI is the petrol offering among a three model range. Mated with a six-speed DSG transmission, this 1.8-litre turbo unit has a broad torque curve that kicks in at 1350rpm and tops out at 4500. At that point, it delivers peak power through to 6200rpm, so there’s never a flat spot to the Scout’s willing performance.

ADR combined fuel consumption is 7.1 litres/100km on 95 RON PULP, though our test week returned an average of 9.2.

Grip and traction is omnipresent, thanks to the Scout’s Haldex all-wheel-drive that automatically diverts the correct amount of drive (up to 95 percent) to the rear wheels as conditions require, and an electronic diff lock.

There’s interior room aplenty: with rear seats in place, cargo space amounts to 588 litres; with seats down, it opens up to a capacious 1718.

For

SUV versatility with station wagon driving dynamics, equipment, functionality.

Against
