RACQ announces LGBTQ+ inclusion award

RACQ has achieved bronze tier status in the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), showcasing the Club’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture.

The AWEI is the national benchmark on LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion and gauges the overall impact of inclusion initiatives within an organisation.

Over the past few years, RACQ has introduced a number of key policy changes aimed at building a more inclusive culture - gender affirmation leave in 2023, supporting employees taking steps to affirm their gender, as well as gender-neutral parental leave inclusive of adoption and surrogacy.

RACQ Head of People and Culture, Holly Gerlach said policy change is key to creating an inclusive culture.

“It’s been fantastic to start 2025 achieving bronze tier status in the AWEI,” Holly said.

“We want our people to feel confident to be their whole selves at work, so it’s crucial we have policies in place to support them.”

RACQ LGBTQ+ Employee Reference Group, Affinity has played a key role in the implementation of these changes, and in 2025 welcomes new Chair, Chenea Evans and Group Executive Sponsor, Glenn Toms.

Chenea said a lot has changed at RACQ in her 17-year tenure and she is excited for what’s to come.

“During my time at RACQ I have seen radical progress, and while there is still work to be done, I am proud of the changes we have seen in the last few years,” Chenea said.

“Through the development of groups like Affinity and the Inclusion at RACQ committee, employees are given a greater voice to drive change that directly impacts us.

“I am passionate about ensuring everyone’s uniqueness is celebrated at work, so I’m looking forward to taking on the role as Chair of Affinity and working alongside Glenn to continue this great momentum.”

Chenea also said Affinity has earmarked a few important milestones for the new calendar year.

“Wear It Purple Day and International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia are a few of the many events we will celebrate this year,” she said.

“We are also excited to again attend the Brisbane Pride March in September, where we get to stand alongside other Queensland organisations championing inclusion.”

RACQ has also established an Affinity Ally Network this year for employees wanting to promote and support LGBTQ+ inclusion across the organisation.
