RACQ crowns cheapest fuel stations in SEQ
RACQ has praised fuel stations in South East Queensland who have kept prices fair for motorists while facing record wholesale prices and inflationary pressures.
RACQ’s September quarter Fuel Price Report revealed the cheapest station in SEQ was Liberty Oil Lawnton in the Moreton Bay Region with an average price of 182.3cpl for regular unleaded (ULP).
Metro Sandgate was the cheapest in Brisbane charging an average of 184cpl, while Hope Energy Ashmore was the cheapest on the Gold Coast (183.8cpl).
RACQ’s Principal Economic and Affordability Specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys said these cheaper sites charged well below their region’s average prices.
“Between July and September, the average price for ULP in Brisbane was 198.2cpl, on the Gold Coast it was 195cpl and 198.3cpl in the Moreton Bay region,” Dr Jeffreys said.
“The cheapest sites were charging up to 16cpl less on average and we want to congratulate these fuel stations for offering motorists a good deal despite uncontrollable global influences.
“Following OPEC’s cut to oil production in July 2023, the global oil price increased by 25% in three months. This, along with a weak Australian dollar, contributed to record high averages and an all time high of 237.9cpl for ULP at the majority of sites.”
RACQ’s September quarterly report also exposed SEQ’s most expensive fuel stations, with BP Tugan taking out the unenviable top spot, charging motorists an average of 216.4cpl for ULP.
“The difference between the cheapest and most expensive site in South East Queensland was an average of 30cpl. Over the three months, that’s a difference of $105 for an average sized car in Queensland,” Dr Jeffreys said.
“That’s why it’s so important to use fuel price monitoring apps, like RACQ’s Fair Fuel Finder, to find the cheaper sites – not only to save yourself money, but also to drive local competition.”
The Gold Coast was the cheapest city in SEQ for unleaded, costing motorists 195cpl on average, followed by the Sunshine Coast (195.7cpl) and Ipswich (196.4cpl).
Nationally, Brisbane was the second most expensive capital city for ULP and the most expensive out of Australia’s five largest capital cities for diesel over the September quarter.
