Group CEO David Carter said as at 12:30pm today (19 December), RACQ had received 299 insurance claims, including 216 home and contents and 83 motor vehicle claims, since Tropical Cyclone Jasper first hit the region.

“Our Mobile Member Centre has been at James Cook University’s Smithfield campus since last Friday and continues to support members in the area to lodge claims and answer any questions they may have,” Mr Carter said.

“We have also bolstered our claims lodgements teams to process the increasing number of claims we are receiving online and over the phone.

“Our assessors and repairers are on standby and are being deployed when it is safe to do so. Claims will be triaged, according to need and circumstances.

“The quickest and easiest way to lodge your claim is to go online. Using our online portal, you can also upload photos of the damage to help speed up your claim.

“If you would prefer to speak to a consultant, in addition to our Mobile Member Centre, our Cairns store is open from today or you can call us on 13 72 02.”

Mr Carter said the Club’s Roadside Assistance crews are also operating in the region.

“Our roadside assistance teams are ready to help those in need and while we have been impacted by road closures, we are continuing to reach people as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We urge drivers to avoid the roads and stay at home. This will allow emergency responders, including our crews, to move more safely so they can continue to help those in need.

“If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 000 immediately.”

Up to date road information in the region can be found at RACQ’s Road Conditions website.

Preparing your claim:

  • If you are able to safely return to your home:
  • Making notes and taking photos of your belongings will make it easier to submit any claims
  • It’s OK to throw away all spoiled food in your refrigerator- you don’t need to wait for an assessor to visit your home. Take a picture
  • Keep a record of model numbers or serial numbers of items you are throwing away to help us replace them
  • It’s OK to remove material and fabrics such as carpets if they are wet to avoid mould growing. Take a photo to help with replacement
  • Make a list of essentials you will need to replace, such as bedding, clothing and food. Keep all receipts from these purchases
  • Remember safety is the number one priority

What to do during a flood:

After a cyclone has passed, serious safety threats can remain.

  • Only use a generator in well-ventilated areas
  • Watch out for dangerous wildlife, such as spiders and snakes, which may have entered your property
  • Check all power and gas supplies have been turned off if the building has sustained any damage
  • Stay well-hydrated and wear a sunscreen and a hat if working outdoors
  • Avoid contact with floodwater if possible
