Kuraby had the cheapest bowsers in Brisbane in 2023, with service stations in the southern suburb selling regular unleaded for an average of 180.1 cents per litre (cpl), according to RACQ’s Annual Fuel Price Report.

Bald Hills in northern Brisbane was not far behind at 183.5cpl, followed by Moorooka (185.1cpl), Fairfield (186cpl) and Annerley (186.6cpl) on the southside, compared with the average price for Greater Brisbane of 193.1cpl.

RACQ’s Principal Economic and Affordability Specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys said there was a big price difference between the cheapest and most expensive suburbs.

“One of the cheapest suburbs was Moorooka, yet neighbouring Salisbury was one of the most expensive which is why it’s so important to shop around by using fuel price monitoring apps like RACQ’s Fair Fuel Finder,” Dr Jeffreys said.

“Drivers who filled up in Moorooka instead of Salisbury could have saved $225 over the year simply by driving to the next suburb, so it really does pay to do your research.”

The most expensive suburb in Brisbane in 2023 was Milton, where regular unleaded sold for an average price of 204.4cpl, followed by Lytton (201.8cpl), Toowong (201.3cpl), Salisbury (201cpl) and Jindalee in the western suburbs (199.9cpl).

Molendinar was not only the cheapest suburb for unleaded on the Gold Coast, but also for the entire South East Queensland (SEQ) region, selling unleaded for an average of 176.6cpl. Tugun was the most expensive at 201.6cpl.

Walloon (180.9cpl) was the cheapest suburb in Ipswich for regular unleaded, Berrinba (181.1cpl) was the most affordable in Logan and Maleny (181cpl) was best priced on the Sunshine Coast.

Dr Jeffreys said Brisbane motorists had now endured two consecutive years of record-breaking petrol prices, largely due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and OPEC production cuts.

“On average, Brisbane motorists paid 193.1cpl for regular unleaded in 2023, which was 8.2cpl higher than the previous record set in 2022,” he said.

“We also saw a new record retail price for unleaded in SEQ, with many servos hiking to 237.9cpl in October 2023, when the daily average price in the Brisbane market also hit a record of 232.4cpl.”
