More frequent public transport tops Games legacy wish list
Queenslanders valued increased public transport services above all else, with three in four listing it as the most important transport legacy from the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

RACQ’s 2025 Future Brisbane Survey also revealed investment in major motorways (71%) was listed as the second most important transport legacy, followed by creating safe, healthy and accessible neighbourhoods (67%).
The research indicated that concerns over traffic congestion and a lack of reliable transport options were front of mind for Queenslanders, as the region contended with the pressures of a booming population.
RACQ’s General Manager Advocacy Joshua Cooney said governments must respond with targeted improvements to public transport services to foster greater confidence the region can grow sustainably for the Games and beyond.
“Our members and Queenslanders have spoken – congestion and connectivity must be the primary focus when planning to futureproof the south east,” Mr Cooney said.
“Population growth is not the problem, how we plan for it is. There are much larger cities than Brisbane that efficiently move millions of people daily through integrated transport networks.”
Mr Cooney said RACQ backed proposals to expand the Brisbane Metro to other areas of South East Queensland as a fast and effective solution to bolster public transport.
“Buses remain the backbone of our region’s transport network. It’s crucial we maximise the use of our current infrastructure while building new corridors and connections to bridge any gaps,” he said.
“The recently finished Adelaide Street bus tunnel demonstrates how strategic investment can improve connections and boost service frequency, all the while helping to ease road congestion.
“RACQ is also urging the rollout of ‘Metro Glider’ services – smaller, more agile electric buses modelled after the Brisbane Metro – to act as suburban connectors, channelling passengers onto main, high-frequency routes. We also envisage them servicing key corridors leading into the city that larger Metros can’t access.
“These vehicles could be deployed more rapidly, as they would only need upgrades to the existing road network, rather than the construction of entirely new busways.
“If we succeed, Brisbane will stand as a benchmark for strategic urban planning, setting the standard for other rapidly growing cities.”
RACQ thanked its members for taking part in the survey and said it would use the findings to advocate on behalf of all Queenslanders for smart planning decisions as the region continued to grow.
