RACQ welcomes recommended changes to e-mobility bill

The State Parliamentary Committee examining e-mobility has listened to the feedback from RACQ and its members with the identification of two main issues addressed in its report.

First, the Committee has recommended a 10km/hr speed limit should not apply to shared paths and some relaxation to ‘lower traffic’ footpaths.

Second, the Committee recommended the initial Learner licence requirement should be adjusted to cater for people who cannot legally drive due to impairments and other conditions but are able to ride.

RACQ’s General Manager Advocacy Joshua Cooney said these two issues will be key to achieve the intended outcome of this legislation.

“A blanket 10km/hr speed limit on shared paths and footpaths was a concerning proposition for our members, with many shared paths designed well and wide enough to safely cater for higher speeds,” Mr Cooney said.

“Requiring all riders to first obtain a Learners licence was also very problematic as it excluded people who are unable to get a car licence or drive due to a range of impairments.

“What we have now from the Committee, if adopted, is a set of recommendations that will strike a better balance to ensure we prioritise safety, but not at the expense of discriminating against people who can’t use e-mobility.

“The Government still needs to consider the report and make any further amendments before passing new laws. It’s important Queensland gets this right the first time.

“Ultimately, what our members want is for e-mobility to be managed safely and sustainably without any perverse outcomes and these suggested amendments are a good step forward.”

RACQ will further analyse the Committee’s report to ensure our members’ feedback and concerns are addressed before any new laws are passed.
