Qld’s most dangerous intersections revealed

Queensland’s most dangerous intersection has been revealed by RACQ, with the intersection at Kedron Park and Lutwyche roads in Brisbane taking out the title for the second year in a row.

Media Release

Department of Transport and Main Roads data revealed the intersection at Kedron recorded nine serious crashes and 16 serious casualties between 2017-2019.

The Deeragun Road and Geaney Lane intersection in Townsville came a close second with nine serious crashes and 11 casualties, and the Paradise Island, Clifford Street and Remembrance Drive intersection at Surfers Paradise was ranked third most dangerous in the State.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said many of the intersections named on the list were regularly congested and difficult for drivers to negotiate.

“The Kedron intersection is large and complex, catching out drivers who don’t pay enough attention to the traffic signals, so it is no surprise it remains the most dangerous in Queensland,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It’s a similar story at the Surfer’s Paradise intersection, with the most common crash caused by drivers not giving way to oncoming vehicles correctly when turning right on a green light.

“But there is some good news, the Deeragun intersection was awarded funding under the Federal Government’s Black Spot program last year and work has been completed. So we should now see less serious crashes at this location.”

Ms Ritchie urged all levels of government to work together to fix dangerous intersections and reduce traffic across the network.

“Congestion generally increases the risk of crashes due to the number of cars interacting with each other on the road,” she said.

“We need all levels of government to commit to road and intersection upgrades that relieve congestion and reduce crashes, and to provide alternative corridors.

“Most crashes are caused by human error, so remember to be patient, don’t rush, pay attention to traffic signals and signs, and keep a safe distance between you and the car in front.”
