Fuel pump pain for inner city Brisbane
Inner-city and western Brisbane drivers were being charged record high prices for unleaded petrol (ULP) today, with fuel tipping on average 173.1 cents per litre (cpl) on Thursday.
RACQ confirmed suburbs within central and western suburbs* were paying a premium when compared with other regions in the River City.
Club spokesperson Renee Smith said while some Brisbane motorists were paying through the nose, the overall average ULP price in the River City remained just shy of an all-time record at 168.5cpl.
“When we reach the peak of the fuel cycle we do see pockets of higher prices but we’ve never seen prices this high in central and western suburbs,” Ms Smith said.
“Brisbane’s record daily average for ULP is 169cpl which we saw back in October last year.
“These high prices in the south east can be attributed to high indicative retail margins, at 29.5cpl, so servos are just raking it in. Adding to this are elevated prices in Singapore, which are pushing up the terminal gate price,
“The Gold Coast and Ipswich markets are also in the expensive phase of the cycle.”
However, Ms Smith said the Club expected prices to fall in coming days and urged drivers to delay filling up for now.
“After we reach the peak, we then see prices drop relatively quickly so the longer you can wait to fill up the tank, the better,” she said.
“Using apps like RACQ’s Fair Fuel Finder will help you find sites selling for cheaper and ensure you get the best deal.”
