Traffic lights to discourage rat runners

The State’s peak motoring body has thrown its support behind the proposed installation of traffic lights at a busy Brisbane through-road.

Brisbane City Council said it would install the lights along Shaw Road, Wavell Heights, between Gympie and Sandgate Roads.

The road has often been used as a thoroughfare for thousands of drivers, in a bid to avoid the heavily congested arterial roads.

The changes, which would also see the widening of Shaw Road to include extra lanes, would coincide with a major sports precinct upgrade.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the works would significantly improve safety.

“Currently there are congestion and safety issues at the intersection, especially during events, which is a concern,” Ms Ritchie said.

“The traffic lights will make it safer for drivers to enter and exit the sports precinct in any direction.

“These changes will also improve pedestrian and cyclist safety in the area.”
