Facial recognition cameras to hit GC public transport

Facial recognition technology is set to be installed on public transport across the Gold Coast ahead of the Commonwealth Games, in a bid to identify potential terror suspects before they can get close to any public venues.

The Australian Federal Police was behind the proposal, recommending the cameras be installed on trains, trams and buses at major platforms and stops – as well as operate 24-7 during the Games.

News Corp revealed if the cameras prove successful, authorities could consider implementing the technology at other major events, as governments look to heighten security following recent terror attacks.

It is understood if a camera was to identify a potential terror suspect, it would trigger a rapid response from police and military.
