The solid line rule dividing Qld drivers

RACQ has had to give drivers a refresher on the road rules, after an online quiz left hundreds of motorists baffled and confused.

An image of three cars, and a truck was posted to the RACQ Facebook page with the question “which vehicles can make these turns legally?”

The post attracted hundreds of comments, with many respondents arguing vehicles were not allowed to cross solid white lines.

Lyndon S said: “A. Blue car can cross single white line to enter or leave the roadway. Green has broken line to cross. Yellow is not subject to unbroken line on the road it wishes to enter.”

Amber M answered: “Only the blue and the green one, the blue one is a resident.”

Club spokesperson Clare Hunter said the correct answer was D, all vehicles could turn legally.

“A driver can cross a single continuous dividing line if they’re entering or leaving the road, for example if they’re turning to enter a side street, a driveway or a carpark,” Ms Hunter said.

“You can’t cross a single continuous centre line to overtake or do a U-turn. In this scenario the yellow vehicle turning out of the car park would also be required to give way to the green vehicle on the road.

“This quiz was a tricky one, but it shows no matter how long you’ve been behind the wheel, you should regularly brush up on your road rules.

“We encourage everyone to join in on our Facebook road rule quizzes to help keep their knowledge up to date.”
