ANCAP reveals safest cars of 2019

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has revealed its best cars for 2019, with the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, Tesla Model X and Tesla Model 3 taking out the top spots.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class received five-stars and an overall score of 90.2 percent, performing well in the areas of Child Occupant Protection at 92 percent and Vulnerable Road User Protection at 91 percent.

The Tesla’s Model X came in second at 89.6 percent, receiving 98 percent for Adult Occupant Protection and 94 percent for Safety Assist.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said buyers in the market for a new car could not go wrong with a five-star vehicle.

“Your car is the last line of defence in a crash, so it’s crucial you’re choosing one with the best star rating within your budget,” Ms Ritchie said.

“While a Mecendes-Benz or Tesla might not be an affordable option for everyone, of the 40 vehicles ANCAP reviewed in 2019, 33 achieved the top rating meaning there’s plenty of safe options out there.”

ANCAP Chief Executive James Goodwin said a top performer must demonstrate high scores across all four key areas of assessment.

“Worthy of a notable mention is the Toyota HiAce – the first commercial van to be assessed and perform exceptionally well against the stringent 2019 criteria.”
