Council’s $5 million South Bris and CBD intersection upgrades

The four intersections to be upgraded were:

  • Grey and Peel Streets
  • Peel and Merivale Streets
  • Roma and Countess Streets
  • Upper Roma and Skew Streets.

RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said it welcomed intersection upgrades would be but questions remained about the flow-on effects on Stanley and Vulture Streets.

“Nearly 11,000 cars use the Victoria Bridge, so when it’s closed 70 percent of traffic is expected to move onto the William Jolly Bridge,” Mr Turner said.

“We’d still like to see improvements at the other end of South Brisbane along Stanley and Vulture Streets which are expected to become more even more congested.

“These roads are some of the busiest in Brisbane, with the latest travel time report showing traffic only averages 17.9km/h during the morning peak on Stanley Street.”

Construction of the Brisbane Metro was expected to commence in 2019, with services to be running by 2023.
