It’s too late to leave
Locals in Central and north Queensland who haven’t yet left their properties must now wait out the storm, as the category four system approaches.
“There are already very strong winds in the area and you can’t outrun a storm like this. Stay indoors and stay safe,” RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said.
“You’ll be putting your life and the lives of emergency service personnel at risk if you attempt to get in your car and leave the area.”
Some road closures were already in place and with large scale flooding predicted, road conditions were expected to worsen.
“Our message is simple: if it’s flooded, forget it.”
Residents were also urged to bring their pets inside and have a list of emergency contacts ready to call if necessary.
Cyclone Debbie is expected to make landfall this afternoon.
