New Mazda2 revealed
The latest 2 brings enhanced looks, refreshed interior and powertrain upgrades.
Mazda have given local motoring media a first look at the new Mazda2, also releasing details and pricing for the new model that goes on sale from the start of December.
The latest 2 brings enhanced looks, refreshed interior, powertrain upgrades that improve power, torque and efficiency, updated suspension for a better ride and more linear handling response, plus a raft of standard advanced safety features.
The model range has also been consolidated with two grades in sedan and three grades in hatch versions, instead of the three hatch and four sedans of the superseded range. Once transmission options are factored in, there’s now a total of seven models to choose from.
The range gets off the start line with the manual (six- speed) G15 Pure in either sedan or hatch at an MLP of $20,990. An auto (also six- speed) in either adds $2000 to the price. Sedan buyers then move straight to the auto-only G15 GT listing at $25,990, a price shared with the top-spec auto-only G15 GT hatch. The middle ground in the hatch range is filled by the G15 Evolve with auto at $24,490.
The new price sees access to the Mazda2 tribe jump a substantial $5420 (comparing the previous model Neo to the new Pure, both in manual form).
Externally, there’s new paint colours, a new front face featuring a mesh grille like Mazda6, revised bumper design, new LED headlamps with integrated fog lights, revised alloy wheels, and at the rear a new bumper and taillamps.
There’s new interior trims and colour palettes specific to each grade. Comfort has been boosted courtesy of new design seating. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are newly available as standard too.
The 1.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine features mechanical revisions and delivers increased outputs of 82kW (+3kW) and 144Nm (+5Nm) with lower emissions. Latest SkyActiv G-Vectoring Control Plus complements other suspension updates for enhanced dynamics and ride quality.
The new Mazda2 now delivers a host of iActivsense advanced safety features on all models including Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist system, and pedestrian detection for Smart City Brake Support. Evolve models and above also feature Traffic Sign Recognition. GT models also pick up a 360-degree view monitor with four separate cameras working together to give drivers a bird’s eye view minimising blind-spots and helping avoid hazards.
