New car preview: 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series
Under the hood with AMG’s most powerful V8 yet.
Performance car heavyweight Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its most powerful V8 model yet, a track-focused version of its muscular Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.
The race-ready 2021 model features a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with special flat-plane crank that delivers a heroic 537kW and 800Nm and is capable of firing the coupe to 100km/h in a scorching 3.2 seconds.
For those brave enough and with access to a race track, the flagship model is capable of reaching 200km/h in just under nine seconds, with a dizzying V-max of 325km/h.
The Black Series GT’s engine is matched with a seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission that’s fixed at the rear axle and connected via a carbon-fibre torque tube, which Mercedes claims weighs 40% less than that of the AMG GT.
Carbon-fibre is used extensively throughout the flying coupe to further minimise weight, including in the suspension, roof, panels and adjustable rear wing.
On hand to stop the Black Series are AMG ceramic high-performance compound brakes, with motorsport-spec brake pads and discs, optimised for fade resistance and temperature stability.
The track theme extends to the coil-over suspension, which features adaptive adjustable damping to fine-tune the handling.
Owners can also option an AMG Track Package which features a bolt-in titanium roll-cage with four-point seatbelts for driver and front passenger and a 2kg fire extinguisher. The package is only available in combination with AMG carbon-fibre bucket seats.
Looks-wise, the coupe is hard to miss with a new carbon-fibre bonnet design, two large exhaust air outlets and integrated louvres. A new rear apron with a large diffuser, two rounded twin tailpipe trims, side wheel arch ventilation, and an adjustable double rear wing leave onlookers in no doubt as to the car’s intent.
Inside, there’s Nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre upholstery, complete with racy black and orange contrasting topstitching.
While the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been confirmed for an Australian launch sometime in 2021, the exact date, pricing and numbers available have yet to be announced. If the current GT flagship price is anything to go by, punters can expect to pay north of $453,200 (plus on-road costs).
