Take a virtual tour of North Queensland

Social media campaign promotes region’s attractions during coronavirus lockdown.

North Queensland promotional body Townsville Enterprise has launched a new initiative aimed at giving people a taste of what the region has to offer without leaving their homes.

Described as a “virtual staycation or online holistay” it is hoped to inspire a future wave of visitors to North Queensland when travel restrictions due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) are lifted.

Townsville Enterprise launched the Virtual Staycation Social Series in partnership with key regional tourism operators.

Townsville Enterprise Tourism and Events Director Lisa Woolfe said the new social media initiative was a logical decision during the lockdown.

“We’re all encouraged to stay at home right now for the safety and wellbeing of our community, which means people everywhere are looking for entertaining and educational content to inspire the dreaming phase of their future travel journey,” she said.

“Now, more than ever, is the time to remind locals of what a stunningly beautiful place we call home, and what better way to showcase the best our region has to offer than through engaging video content.”

Ms Woolfe said the tourism industry has been hit hard by the impacts of COVID-19, however this initiative gave the tourism industry a new opportunity to share their attractions.

“If nothing else, our resilient tourism industry is being incredibly innovative and are using social media to continue to share their message and their world-class experiences with audiences in homes right across our region and beyond,” she said.

“We hope that by sharing this unique staycation content with our engaged audience, that we can not only evoke a sense of mindfulness with videos of our relaxing pristine scenery, but also offer exclusive behind-the-scenes access to enliven and educate the most active of minds.”

The series includes a virtual reality experience diving the Museum of Underwater Art's Coral Greenhouse display, a virtual classroom with the curators of the Museum of Tropical Queensland and a tour of Townsville’s street art.
