The ugliest part of me

There are lots of things I like about myself.

There are lots of things I don’t like about myself.

Here’s the thing I like LEAST about myself.

I’m envious.

I’m fairly new to the social media game, and for the most part, I enjoy it immensely. But too often, being on social media makes me feel “less than”. It’s almost impossible for me not to compare the circumstances of my life with others who, seemingly, have it better.

On the surface, everyone else takes the most amazing vacations, eats at the most elegant restaurants, raises the most talented kids, lives in the most exclusive neighbourhoods, drives the shiniest cars, and does backflips off rock cliffs into emerald waterfalls.

There’s always someone who’s got more – ‘er’ than me: younger, prettier, richer, healthier, smarter, happier, hairier.

What I fail to realise is that these images are indeed accurate but are rarely the truth.

When I compare myself to others, I feel only two possible outcomes (and both are bad): arrogance or jealousy.

Like an old proverb says: “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” It’s not healthy to be envious. It eats you away from the inside out. A peaceful heart and a jealous heart CANNOT coexist in the same space.

If you’ve ever got sucked into the vortex of comparing yourself to others, here’s 3 strategies that’ll help curb those destructive feelings of envy:

  1. If something or someone on social media ever make you feel “less than”, get rid of him/her/ it immediately. Unfollow, unlike, mute, block.
  2. Start a thankfulness journal. Make it a practice to write down at least 3 things each day that you’re grateful for. Count your blessings! This is the best anecdote I know of for staving off unnecessary comparisons. Remember, there are people in the world who would love to have your ‘bad’ day, any day.
  3. Go out of your way to compliment someone else’s successes. Rather than being super jealous of another’s progress, encourage them on a job well done. You’ll make them feel great and you’ll feel great too.
