‘Queensland motorists deserve better protection’ is the core focus of leading insurer RACQ’s submission to the Inquiry into the Tow Truck Bill 2023 (‘the Bill’).

In its submission, RACQ identified the key areas of importance in the Bill and existing 1973 Tow Truck Act which need urgent addressing to ensure motorists are not left exposed and vulnerable to exploitation by third party Accident Management Companies and Credit Repair/Hire operators.

RACQ Chief Executive Insurance Trent Sayers said watered down protections and lack of awareness or proper enforcement of legislative requirements can unnecessarily place upward pressure on insurance premiums, lead to repair issues and intimidating, coercive conduct by towing providers.

“As one of the largest providers of car insurance in Queensland, we see firsthand the emotional and financial toll accidents can have on motorists, and while the vast majority of towing operators are operating ethically the Bill needs to protect motorist in their time of need when they are seeking honest, ethical and appropriate assistance,” Mr Sayers said.

“Queensland motorists need this Bill to protect them and to ensure all towing providers are acting in their best interest, not self-interests. It is disappointing that a minority of operators in what is otherwise a professionally run industry makes this legislative protection critical for motorists.

“Our submission outlines our recommendations for the areas we believe need urgent revision, particularly when it comes to privacy and disclosing sensitive information, incentives for towing services and conduct by towing operators.”
