From roadside rescues to technical research
After completing his 'A' grade certificate of motor mechanics in the early '90s, Andrew started at RACQ as a Vehicle Inspector based at the Club’s former Water Street location.
After an eight-year stint interstate, Andrew rejoined the Club, helping our members with vehicle pre-purchase inspections, roadworthies and spot checks.
It wasn’t until 2004 that he decided to put his hand up to join the Road Service team as a Patrol Officer.
“I loved this role – no two days were the same," Andrew said.
"Sometimes it was hot, sometimes it was pouring with rain – you never knew what you would come across that day. Our goal was always to help members in their time of need, and I found this incredibly rewarding.”
Andrew was a part of the Roadside team for 17 years, until an injury to his shoulder prompted the need for a career shift while he was healing.
“While I was recovering, I joined the Motoring Advice team, helping members with technical questions via phone and email. It was a bit of a shock going from being on the road to an office but am grateful I could still do something I loved while I was managing my injury,” Andrew said.
In 2021, Andrew was asked if he was interested in a secondment within the Public Policy team as a Technical Researcher.
“This role was so eye-opening, especially with our strong focus on e-mobility," he said.
"It’s very future-focused, helping RACQ commit to its broader 2032 sustainability strategy. It’s an exciting role, too. We look at injury data and do presentations with our findings, plus, we get to share these insights with the media; you may have seen me on TV a few times!
"I also had the opportunity to speak on RACQ’s expert panels about EVs and fuel, answering questions that are top-of-mind for our members.
“Looking back, if it wasn’t for my shoulder, I don’t think I'd be in this position today. While it was an unfortunate injury, it sent me in a completely new career direction.
“I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve built along the way and for my leaders at RACQ who always trusted my experience and knowledge.”
